17th Annual Native American Festival

When:
March 1-2 10 am- 9 pm

While America is a melting pot of cultures and ideas, before the Europeans came there was a rich culture of Native Americans that we sometimes ignore. You can learn about the Native American experience through text books and literature, but there’s no substitute for experience, for seeing it with your own eyes. Throughout the country there are pow-wows and festivals that celebrate the Native American experience. One such festival is the 17th Annual Native American Festival, which will be held this year at Francis Field in St. Augustine.
“We have several dance troupes coming in [such as] the Big Mountain dancers.” says Seminole Chief Frank Moore, “We bring in dance troupes of different styles from across the country, including Fire Dancers from Mexico City...We also have an East meets West [dancers] showing the difference between Eastern [American] Indian dancers and Western.”
Part of the gate proceeds benefit the Police Athletic League, a non-profit organization with the goal to help kids stay out of trouble by providing them with constructive options such as sports and other activities. PAL brings law enforcement officers and youth together in a positive environment to encourage communication that will lead to trust and respect for each other.
You might see some of the kids, teens and young adults from their Explorer Program at the festival. The Explorers are youngsters who are interested in a career in law enforcement. The event helps get them out in the community.
The festival will include Native American vendors, flute players storytellers and a 1850s history encampment. Events will be scheduled every hour during the two day fest, which runs from 10 am to 9 pm on March 1st and 2nd. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for minors under 18 years of age. Children under 5 get into the fest for free.
