WHERE: Florida Theatre, 128 E Forsyth St. Downtown
WHEN: Friday, March 26
On Friday, March 28, the Friends of the Florida Theatre are hosting a special fundraising event, Art After Dark 2008. Featuring artwork from a selection of promising Jacksonville artists, Art After Dark (AAD) has become a highly anticipated event each spring.
You know how wealthy folks on television never have time for their kids because they’re always rushing off to another fundraising social event? Well, here’s your chance to do the same.
No, I don’t mean you should neglect your kids and act like you’re better than everyone else. Leave that to the professionals. I mean take your spouse out for an interesting evening and support a great Jacksonville Institution, the Florida Theatre.
Since 1927, the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville has provided the area with an elegant setting suitable for civic needs, private events and quality entertainment. Located at 128 East Forsyth Street and restored to grandeur, it continues to serve the community. It’s not too much to ask for one evening, where the community puts down a few bucks and gets a lot more in return.
On that evening, AAD attendees will encounter a multitude of treats sure to make their night, but first there’s the artwork. Displaying the work of 12 professional artists and many student artists, Art After Dark gives anyone the opportunity to own a piece of Jacksonville culture. Most artwork is for sale, and 90 percent of the proceeds go directly to the artists.
This year’s artists are Monica Black, Michael Cenci, Bobby Davidson, Clay Doran, Rebecca Forster, Steve Forster, Beth Haizlip, Ali Isabelle, Lynn Matyi, Susan Paolucci, Nicklos Richards and Grant Thorton. It’s exciting to think that someone may purchase a work of art from an artist who will one day be famous. Why not contribute to a worthy cause while taking a chance on one of our area’s artists?
Even if art isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other things to do. Take part in a live auction for such luxurious items as a Toyota Prius or a Peterbrooke Chocolate Fountain. Listen to the music of Goliath, performing on the stage inside the Theatre, or hang out at the carnival-style street party until midnight. With catered food from Anthony’s Catering, Peterbrooke Chocolatier, Tento Churrascaria and Stover’s Custom Cakes, you’ll get your fill.
General admission tickets are only $15, and VIP tickets are only $50. The VIP party will include such luxuries as champagne, Peterbrooke Chocolate, and swag (gifts). To learn more about Art After Dark, check out their website at artafterdarkjax.org.
