Eureka! Marine Science Camp- Girls Inc.

Drama Americana

      For 30 years the River City Playhouse has sent positive messages to our youth by using the arts to discuss important issues and promote academic success, and by giving kids a chance to learn the ins and outs of the theatre. River City Playhouse Summer Camp 2007 is just one of the ways they will do just that this year. The camp will take place from June 4th to the 29th.

      Campers ages 7-16 will get a chance to learn about acting, music and dance while putting together an educational play entitled “American Heroes,” which is all about the founders of our country. In addition to daily theatre training, other activities include swimming, arts and crafts, guest speakers and field trips. Camp hours are from 8:30 to 4:30 Monday through Friday. Extended care is also available from 4:30 to 5:45 for an additional charge. The total cost of the camp is $425, which includes a $25 activities fee to cover the cost of the field trips and the Career Enrichment guests that will be speaking.

Theatre from every angle


      This summer at the Orange Park Community Theatre, kids will get a chance to learn every facet of theater production through their extensive summer workshops and theater classes. The sessions kick off this month and will continue through August.

      Beginning on March 29 until May 16, OPCT will sponsor Youth Theater Classes, which will teach kids the basic terminology of theatre and acting and help them develop creativity, teamwork, and self confidence over 10 sessions. Elementary and middle school aged children are welcome to attend these classes for $100. In addition, OPCT will also host two intensive workshops for kids. First is the Summer Youth Workshop for children ages 5-12, which will cover many aspects of theater production including acting, makeup and costumes. Then there’s the Summer Teen Workshop for ages 12-19, which goes a step further by also teaching lighting, set construction and more. At the end of the workshop students will present two performances. The cost for each workshop is $150.

Fun-filled fitness camps for your star athlete


Hoop It Up

      Does your son dream of being the next Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant? If so, Matt Kilcullen’s Osprey Basketball Camp is where he needs to spend his summer. University of North Florida men’s basketball coach Matt Kilcullen, along with current and former UNF players and high school and college coaches, will get your aspiring basketball star game ready.

      Open to boys ages 8-17, a typical camp day consists of warm-ups, lessons on the fundamentals of basketball, individual skill sessions applied through drills and competitive situations and afternoon league games. The highly experienced staff will give each player individualized coaching based on each camper’s experience and skill level. All campers are required to check-in between 8-8:45 a.m. on Monday the first day of camp and should be dressed for participation at the time of check-in. Each day concludes at 4:45.

Two Terrific Volleyball Camps

      If your child is interested in volleyball, there are two intensive camps that may pique their interest. FCCJ and the JJVA are both hosting summer camps for beginning, intermediate and advanced players.

      FCCJ’s Volleyball Camps will be held at the FCCJ Sports Center on South campus and is open to kids of all skill levels. Younger kids (ages 5-10) are invited to Pee Wee and Little Spikes, a new camp for the littlest of volleyball stars. The camp beings on July 11th and runs through the 13th and costs $65 per player. The Junior High/JV Camp is perfect for Middle schoolers looking to improve their skills. The camp is for beginning and intermediate players in grades five through nine and will be offered on offered July 10-12 and again July 13-15 for only $105. Later in July, FCCJ will give more experienced players an opportunity to develop their skills at specific positions. Position Specialty Camps will be offered on July 23 and July 27 for Junior High/JV and Varsity players. This camp will develop skills at the positions of setter, middle blocker, outside hitter and DS/Libero. Each session lasts about three hours and costs $35 ($65 for both).       Much like FCCJ, JJVA offers a number of camps for every skill level. Kids just starting out can learn the basics while more experienced players can learn expertise at specific positions or team strategies in the team camps. The camps will be held at Jacksonville Indoor Sports center at I-95 and Emerson Street. Instructors will include JJVA coaching staff members and coaches from local colleges, universities and high schools. Kids ages 5 to 10 get a chance to learn the game at JJVA’s Pee Wee and Little Spikes Camp on June 25-27. All boys and girls are welcome to join the fun for just $90. Players in grades 5-9 will learn the basics at JH/JV Developmental Camp. The two-sessions will be held on June 18-20 and June 21-23. Each session costs $165. Older, more experienced campers will get their turn on June 7th through the 9th at the Junior Varsity Developmental camp. Campers in grades 8-10 who have had at least one year of competitive team experience will learn the fundamentals and intermediate team strategies for $165 per camper. Peace Camp- Florida Coalition for Peace & Justice

Crime Scene Investigation Camp


      Thanks to procedural dramas like CSI and Law and Order, crime scene investigators are this generation’s Sherlock Holmes. To give kids a taste of what the dream job is like, minus any blood and guts, of course, the FCCJ Advanced Technology Center is having Crime Scene Investigation Camp on June 11–15 and July 16–20 at FCCJ’s downtown campus.

      At the camp, kids ages 12 to 15 become “Youth Crime Scene Investigators” for one week. Using the latest data security and biotechnology information and equipment, along with other tools of forensic science, the young professionals will examine a “crime scene,” collect evidence, perform analysis, use forensic techniques, extract DNA, identify fibers, explore the field of data security, and more. The thrill of solving the crime will keep kids thoroughly entertained while moms and dads will breathe easier knowing their child is actually learning something during their summer break. Each fun-filled day begins at 9a.m. and wraps up at 5p.m.

      The FCCJ Advanced Technology Center is located at 401 West State Street. The week-long camp costs $350, which includes lunch and supplies. Rock Camp


      For many of us, dreams of rock superstardom are a faint memory. Luckily, we have our children to live vicariously through. If your kid is more interested in playing their guitar than tackling someone on the football field, The Music Studio has got the camp for them. Rock Camp will be held at the Ponte Vedra Beach facility from June 11th to August 10th.

      This week long “guerilla style” program is open to children of all ages and skill levels. The kids will be separated into groups based on their interest, abilities and ages and will then be taught how to play as a band. Throughout the week the bands will receive extensive group and individual lessons. At the end of the week, campers will record two of their favorite songs at the facility’s on-site studio and will have a CD to take home and share with their friends and family.

      The Music Studio is located at 5150 Palm Valley Road in Ponte Vedra Beach. Each camp day will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 2:00. Tuition for this school of rock is $50 for the week. The Salvation Army is hosting a fantastic summer camp right in the heart of Jacksonville at the Child Development Center on Ocean Street downtown.       The Salvation Army Summer Day Camp is for children ages 5 (who have completed Kindergarten) to 12, with hours from 7:00 am until 6:00 p.m.. Campers will get to experience fun activities like swimming, field trips, movies, ceramics, arts and crafts, ice-cream socials, vacation bible school, team sports and games in the facility’s full-size gym and much more. Younger children are welcome to join the fun too at their NAEYC accredited Child Development Center.

      The weekly fee for the Salvation Army Summer Day Camp is just $75. There is a $65 registration fee which includes a t-shirt, and a $100 activities fee. The camp also offers sibling discounts, a nice benefit for parents on a budget. Campers can come play for one week or for the whole summer.
