Title: Good Morning Revival

Label: Epic/Daylight

I saw Good Charlotte live at Club 5 several years ago and thought they were okay for a pop punk outfit. Over the years, I’ve been able to tolerate their singles, I even found myself humming along when ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous’ came on the radio. Still, I’ve never been a huge fan of their stuff and their latest album, Good Morning Revival, hasn’t changed that stance.

Good Charlotte first made a name for themselves in 2000 with their self-titled album. Fans ate it up and came back for seconds when they released The Young and the Hopeless in 2002. Things seemed to be going great for the Waldorf, Maryland five-piece until the 2004 release of their third album The Chronicles of Life and Death. The album was a bit of a departure for the band, who added synthesizers to their sound and began singing about heaver subject matter. The album was met with scathing reviews by critics and fans. It seems the group failed to learn anything from the experience, as their latest release is much of the same.

For me, listening to Good Charlotte’s fourth album was like Chinese water torture. The lyrics are lame, Joel Madden’s voice is mediocre and the music is laughably cribbing off of bands like Coldplay and the Juliana Theory, badly masked by synthesizers. The absolute worst song is track 9, ‘All Black,’ which starts out with creepy organ music a la The Phantom of the Opera and quickly turns into a bizarrely upbeat song about how “dark” these guys wish they were. I don’t care how much eyeliner they invest in, I’m not buying it. The only good thing about Good Morning Revival is deconstructing the junior high-level lyrics to get Madden’s side of his break up with Hilary Duff, and really, who cares about that anyway?

Good Charlotte’s Good Morning Revival was released on March 27th and is available in stores everywhere.
