If you are unaware of the late night cable success of Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, then please skip work on Monday and stay up late Sunday night to watch. This is where you will get little bits of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and other great cartoons. Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters is a full-length feature. You will not see anything that has to do with water or teenagers, but you do get fast food from New Jersey with great personalities.
I was worried that the characters would be lost in the movie and would not be as hilarious as they are in the 25-minute show. Shake is a fast food milkshake who bosses Frylock, a powerful box of flying French fries, and Meatwad, a wad of not-so-bright (but very cute) meat. Together they are misguided “super heroes” who are up to saving the world. Frylock is the smart one while Shake, in all of his conceit, has half-baked ideas and the naïve little Meatwad is, well, beef-brained.
The villains include a man-raping dog, a penis-shaped alien and, my all-time favorite, the smart ass Mooninites, which look like pixilated geometric shapes ala Atari from the 80s. Not only do Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis do the voices for the movie but they are also the writers and directors of this non-sequitor romp. It is perversely entertaining and, even though it is a cartoon, I would leave the kids with the sitter when you go to see it.
Maiellaro and Willis stayed true to the humor of the series and did not sway from the ambiguous format of the show. Although somewhat plotless, their mission in the film is to find the missing screw to the exercise equipment that will save the Universe. Look for racist Lincoln, Rush drummer Neal Peart as himself, a muscular Carl (their obnoxious New Jersey neighbor), a heralded Phil Collins song and other ridiculous antics. The movie is definitely bizarre if you are not already aware of ATHF, but regardless of if you are or are not a fan of the show, get ready to laugh your ass off.
