First she got her BA in Music Theater at FSU, then she went on to Yale University to study opera. The credits that followed this education could fill several pages, including being a Carnegie Hall Soloist with Skitch Henderson, performing Off Broadway operas, joining Faye Dunaway in the National Tour of Master Class and many more impressive feats. In 2006 and 2007 Dorothy was the “Diva of the High C’s,” headlining shows for most of the major cruise lines all over the world.
I can say, after seeing her dynamic show at the Metro, Dorothy Bishop has reinvented herself once again. She is now exploring new and exciting ways to display her remarkable vocal talents. Her press release says it best: “she melds everything from grand opera to urban dance beats showing off her three-octave vocal pipes and outrageous sense of humor.”
As I read the cover of her new CD, I was impressed with the variety of material from such artists as Dusty Springfield, Cher, Sara Brightman and Donna Summer. Bishop sang several of these numbers at The Metro and had the place rocking. In the first set of the evening, which lasted about one hour, she changed outfits four times into dazzling and distinct costumes that had eye appeal extraordinaire!
I have always enjoyed her voice and have her previous CDs, I often use them as background when I am writing. This new CD will definitely be around when I need some high-energy inspiration. I love the way Dorothy can shift gears in some songs and suddenly use her fabulous operatic voice for just a moment and with just a few words to add class and style. The result is a whole new interpretation of classic songs.
Ms. Bishop had a professional video production company taping the show at The Metro and I can guess that some of it will be seen on the Internet through her “MySpace” and “You Tube” sites. I am sure that the video will also open many doors for Dorothy in the nightclub circuit all over the world. In the past four years I have covered two of Dorothy Bishop’s Theatre Jacksonville concerts, but this was the first time I had experienced her talents in a nightclub setting. She is a natural talent who loves to interact with people, and it is apparent that the closeness of the audience supercharges her performance. Thanks, Dorothy, from me and your loyal Jacksonville fans for your visits to your hometown. We appreciate your incredible talents and we appreciate you. Come back soon!
