Blues Guitarist Unveils New Soul Cowboy Sound
Anthony Gomes Live at Mojos

Anthony Gomes went to Nashville to make some changes to his career and sound. While he was there he was well received as an established blues artist, guitar slinger, and flamboyant performer. Once, he even backed up Gretchen Wilson. Gomes was accepted in the Nashville Muzik Mafia whose membership includes Big and Rich, and Cowboy Troy. In his mind, Gomes was melding his blues-rock sound with country. This led to writing some songs in that genre, which came out more like Eddie Van Halen meets Big and Rich.
Gomes’ gig at Mojos was the second stop in his new tour as Anthony Gomes and the New Soul Cowboys. His hot band consists of experienced Nashville cats, David Kerns on bass, Peter Lang on drums, and Dylan St. John on keyboards. Gomes and Co. took the stage decked out in black leather outfits with cowboy hats.
Gomes played the blues and some material off his early albums. More importantly, he worked the crowd with his flashy charisma and showcase guitar playing. With much prodding, Gomes got everyone on their feet.
Frankly, I liked Gomes’ new material which was definitely in the country rock tradition. I could hear the Nashville influence factoring into his songwriting. Gomes Is known for his spectacular blues rock performance at the STBF.
As for Anthony Gomes, he’s a monster talent–a bona-fide guitar god, as accomplished as any of the top guitar idols around. Gomes is determined to explore music as an adventure into unknown territory. It’s a bold and gutsy. The bottom line: Gomes is an electrifying live performer who dazzles audiences with his guitar wizardry no matter what genre style he’s playing.
