I’ve never been a fan of Grey’s Anatomy but when I heard that the show was spawning a spin-off with actors whom I respect, I was interested in the GA’s episode which included an extra hour to introduce the spin-off show, tentatively called Private Practice.
The setting is in Los Angeles Oceanside Wellness Clinic, where Addison has traveled to see her old friends from medical school and get tested for her fertility rating. It seems that Addison, after a couple of failed romances, wants to have a baby at the Wellness Clinic where she can go to her friend Violet (Amy Brenneman) for help. Her and her former roommate, Naomi (Merrin Dungey), resume their catty tit-for-tat relationship. The glimpse into the new spin-off show tells viewers that the air will be full of raging hormones. So, romantic entanglements will flourish on the show, especially with Tim Daly portraying the skirt-chasing Pete. The hunky receptionist, played by Chris Lowell from Veronica Mars, will be going surfing, making the women in the clinic moist with desire.
There are hints that Addison will see and fall for the Wellness Group’s Head Gynecologist, Cooper (Paul Adelstein from Prison Break) but nothing is certain at this point. She sees Naomi for the fertility work-up and finds out she is not a good candidate for a fertilization procedure.
During the two-hour special, the setting goes back to Seattle and focuses on Cristina’s meddling moms, who have organized a big wedding unbeknownest to her. Thank goodness the show didn’t waste too much time back in Seattle and returned to Los Angeles and the Wellness Clinic.
Taye Diggs plays Jackson, a doctor who is treating a guy with erectile dysfunction, and his wife is complaining he doesn’t have sex with her anymore. This clinic pulsates with hormones and lust.
Despite the shallow concerns of the characters in GA, the spin-off show has more potential for dramatic elements and adult character-development in the context of its soapy undercurrent. In other words, the show will focus on who’s doing what to whom, but can take some intriguing tangents. The Addison character dominated the spin-off preview, but there are other fine actors in the ensemble to take up the slack.
ABC moguls tell us that the show is still in development and they are looking at the numbers from the spin-off special. However, it’s a safe bet the show will make it into the fall lineup. The network promises to announce the new show in the last week of May for a June release.
With a clinic full of hot, gorgeous people, who wouldn’t want to go there to either work or be examined? Oh baby!
