what’s new? what’s happening now?
where to go to find out.

Not everything in St. Augustine is old, there are plenty of new businesses, establishments and events cropping up, adding new flavor to the Old City. Making life more convenient for visitors to St. Augustine are the new parking garage downtown and the newly renovated Visitor's Information Center next door.

The St. John's Cultural Council has its finger on the pulse of St. Augustine. That's why, if you want the skinny on events that are coming up on the weekend (or the day) you'll be visiting St. Augustine, there's no better place to go than the new Cultural Council's Kiosk located inside the Visitor's Center. Looking for a little theatre to go to? The Council's got the info. Want to know about upcoming musical acts, interesting seminars, art shows, festivals or even fashion shows? The Council's got you covered there as well. The newly remodeled Visitor's Information Center is located at 10 Castillo Drive. For more information about the Cultural Events Kiosk at the Visitors Information Center, please contact the St. Johns Cultural Council at 904-826-4116.

Magnum Tattoo

Art for your body, art for the walls

One great resource you'll find all around the city is the "Best of St. Augustine Map." This map clearly shows where many of the St. Augustine attractions are located. New to the map is Magnum Tattoo, on the corner of Ponce De Leon and West King Street, which opened in 2006. Magnum is just around the corner from the large Discovery Yoga Studio.

Danielle DeMuro, who has worked in body art since '99, decided that St. Augustine was the place for her, after working at Crazy Philadelphia Eddie and Troy Timpel. She opened Magnum Tattoo and has since been fairly busy.

The studio style tattoo parlor has a bright and comfortable atmosphere, with a statue of Buddha, fresh flowers and a candle adorning one of the countertops. DeMuro seems to have worked to maintain an atmosphere of alt-Zen with an edge. More than that, she wants her business to be a place where art flourishes in a friendly atmosphere.

"We hold art openings during the Friday art walks…" says DeMuro "It gets pretty crazy… [Lately] I've been displaying my own art, alternating with Kevin Newcomb."

Newcomb's series Flowers and Knives currently adorns her walls. If you'd like a taste of her art, you might want to think about offering yourself up as a canvas. The majority of her work is in custom tattoos, though she does offer permanent make-up, tattoo cover-ups and re-constructive tattoos. She hopes to do more work with those who might want areola tattoos, post mastectomy. She tries to donate one of these procedures on a regular basis, for those in need. If you're into body art, or just into art, you might want to stop on by. Call (904) 827-1500 for hours and info.

The Jester's Court

What's your flavor of entertainment?

One of the newest clubs on the scene is Jester's Court, which opened just six months ago. Though the venue is primarily a comedy club, it's also a music venue, bar and restaurant. Even though it's located on San Marco Avenue, in an area laden with tourists, most of their customers seem to be local residents.

Thursday nights they hold "Last Comic Survivor," which they'll be doing through June. After the show they have live music and a DJ. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, they kick off a show 8:30 pm.

Tuesday and Wednesday you can check out the dueling pianos, for a cover charge of $12. From 4pm -8pm musicians often perform acoustic sessions on the back patio. Special events include CD release parties, cover bands and original musical performances.

There really seems to be something for every entertainment taste. On weekends, Magician Bill McCrea performs each weekend, both on stage and going from table to table.

The Jester's Court is also a full-service restaurant and bar. Chef Ralph Gearhart III who is a graduate of Pennsylvania Culinary Institute, serves up classic cuisine, as well as fusion. They're open by 11:30 am everyday except Monday. For more info call (904) 461-8843 or go online at jesterscourtcomedyclub.com.
