<< Palm Garden | Main | Indie Dance Clubs >>

There are two kinds of people in the world, those that dance and those who don’t unless they were so blacked out drunk that they only dance when there is no possibility of remembering it. I am among the latter. I wish I could say that I was one of those people that just goes out and has fun with no regard for how I look on the dance floor, but I’m afraid that I’m really more like Elaine on Seinfeld. I have a dance that I think is cool, but someone with a way cooler haircut and far more expensive jeans is sitting across the club, rehydrating (after a dance routine of their own to some song about partying like a rockstar that I’ve never even heard) and they’re giggling it up at my ridiculous dance style. In my mind’s eye, I also see myself looking like Chunk from Goonies. So dancing is something I tend to avoid.

But you shouldn’t! Grab life by the horns and live the hell out of every minute! Cut the damn rug and shake that ass! There are plenty of places to do that in Jacksonville. From booty clubs like the Ocean Club and Club Paris to more sophisticated places, such as Mark’s Downtown, to Latin nights to indie dance clubs, which Jacksonville actually has a pretty good selection of, such as The Pearl and TSI Discotheque. So pick your poison, there’s a place that you can get down.

Even if clubs aren’t your scene, there are plenty of excuses to shake a leg. There are places to learn ballroom style dancing. Learn to tango and then find some of the places where you can put it to use. Dancing is fun, good for you, and helps you rise above petty fears and social anxiety. Maybe after editing this issue of EU I’ll head straight out to the clubs and overcome my fears, but only if you come up to me and invite me to dance. I’ll probably still say no, but at least you will have done your part.
