moca jacksonville: a young art source
Canvas of Sound

WHAT: Canvas of Sound

WHERE: MOCA Jacksonville

WHEN: Saturday, September 8th

Have you ever shaken your booty while standing next to a famous work of modern art? Well, you’ll soon get the chance. MOCA is giving us an opportunity to boogie amongst the art with their slickest event, Canvas of Sound. Where else would you be able view groundbreaking art from renowned artists with a martini in your hand? I’ll bet that if Warhol were still alive, he’d probably be the first one in the door and wearing his best wig.

On Saturday, September 8th, Canvas of Sound IV will bring together dance music and modern art. Featuring some of Jacksonville’s best DJs, including Catharsis, Odyssey and Phil Green, the evening will also be visually enhanced by VJ Electrolush. Even if it gets too heavy for you, you’ll have all night to shake those ideas loose with beer, wine and mixed drinks from the cash bar.

So why would a museum think it would be a good idea to mix alcohol, art and dance music? It’s about youth – the energy that only the young can generate. Young folks like to dance and drink and party, right? Well, young folks are also the ones feeding the creative spirit of art. Why not bring all of it together? Art can change your perceptions. So can booze. So can music. Perhaps MOCA believes that young people are the future, and they want to teach them well and let them lead the way. MOCA can show them all the beauty they posses inside.

You can contest my point if you like, but I’m not using the word “young” as a measurement of age. Young is a state of mind, and Contemporary Art has to come from that place. Otherwise, it’s just derivative of some former style. Obviously, all art will get old physically, but the ideas that inspire them are always in constant renewal. Particularly in Contemporary Art, new ideas and expressions are paramount, even when they’re expressed by an untrained artist.

Many art museums and galleries all over the globe are committed to collecting and displaying art from the past. Usually, the older the art is, the higher it is regarded, but some museums take a different approach. Jacksonville is lucky to be home to a museum that is dedicated to new art and new ideas. MOCA Jacksonville provides the young people in our city with young artistic ideas.

Doors open at 9 pm, with the event running until 1 am. Tickets are available at the Laura Street entrance at the start of the event. The cost is only $10 for non-members and only $5 for current members. Admission is restricted to people 21 years of age and up, so I guess it’s unfortunate to be too young.
