get your band a practice space

Sure, you could go storage-unit-to-storage-unit trying to convince them that you won’t be practicing there, just storing your band equipment, but eventually you will want to be a serious enough band that you don’t have to lie to storage unit managers or answer the door to police every time your band wants to practice. That’s why professional bands rent studio space. On Saturday, August 25th, Stay Tuned Studios is opening their doors precisely for bands like yours. Stay Tuned has their studios setup so that your band can come in, plug into their equipment and practice for a by-the-hour fee. Stay Tuned is located near the Avenues Mall at 5570 Florida Mining Blvd. South, Unit 105. Call them at (904) 292-9997 or visit staytunedstudios.com for more details.

When you’re done dealing with the bad acoustics of a garage and ready to get serious, you need to get a real rehearsal space. Stay Tuned might not work for every band, since often the sound of the band comes from the equipment you use. There are less conventional opportunities. Go on Craig’s List (jacksonville.craigslist.org) for a practice space. Rent a garage apartment with another band (one you trust) and split the monthly rent. Check out commercial rental space too, often that will be free of complaining neighbors.

If you can’t find anything that is just right, everyone in the band can pitch in to soundproof the spare room in a member’s house, or solicit your biggest fan to use that extra room.

The bottom line is that your band needs a practice space to make serious music. Although it sometimes seems like it, it is not illegal to play music and rehearsing at a realistic live volume makes all of the difference when it comes to your actual performance, so expect to invest money in a space that can accommodate your band. Use gig money to pay for the space or just split it among the band members, but consider this a real expense.
