If you are really into metal, there is this killer show that comes on during Adult Swim on Cartoon Network called Metalocalypse. If you are not at all into metal, there is this really hilarious show on during Adult Swim on Cartoon Network called Metalocalypse. The best thing about this show is that it is so metal, real metal kids will laugh their asses off. It takes itself just serious enough. It has just enough of a death (and murder) fetish alongside nihilism and blood and gore for any metal-head to just eat the humor up. But if you are more likely to laugh at the antics of a metal band that is taking over the society of the future, laugh away. Dethklok will deliver.
Now I’m not exactly sure if there was some killer uber-metal band that some writer loved and so he crafted a show about the ultimate metal band taking over the future, or if some writer just had this great idea for a show about a metal band taking over the future and then they had to find a band to fill those shoes, but either way: Dethklok is releasing a real metal album.
From the double-bass drums to the growling vocals, Dethklok starts off with ‘Murmaider’ (“But beware, for when you quench your bloodthirst, others will seek vengeance on you and they won’t rest until you’re dead.”) and continues on with songs such as ‘Bloodrocuted’ (blood is an energy conductor, I am full of it, all I need is an outlet”), ‘Briefcase Full of Guts,’ ‘Birthday Dethday’ (“Something grew inside of your mother, that thing was YOU! Did she scream? Did she cry? Only those that are born are ones that get to die!“),‘Hatredcopter’ (“You will die at the hands of my arms when they fly and I will take off your face with the front of my hatredcopter”), ‘Castratikron’ and ‘Face Fisted.’ These are just some of the titles on this 16-song album and each number is a pure marvel.
Even if you stripped away the presence of a cartoon about this band, and even if the bass player, Murderface, weren’t the funniest rock and roll character in a cartoon since Gem (she’s truly outrageous), this band could still stand on its own as a brilliant send-up of metal music. It is satire of itself while appreciating itself at the same time. It doesn’t demean metal, this album embraces the very subject it mocks. If you love or hate metal, this album is worth every penny.
