Radiohead’s seventh studio album, In Rainbows, hails as an experience that celebrates more than just music. Ten years removed from the release of OK Computer, Radiohead has continued to create something new and electrifying with each record. This time it wasn’t just the music that was new or revolutionary. For people like myself, whose admiration for the band borders on restraining order, October 1, 2007 was a day when I had to explain to many of my co-workers why I suddenly began screaming wildly at my desk.
Because the band is not currently signed to a record label, they can do whatever they want–and they did. They’ve offered their newest effort exclusively via their website in digital format, for a cost of whatever you think you should pay for it.
The ten songs on In Rainbows all contain an interrelated diversity and the album was clearly meant to be listened to as a whole, which more than likely was the reason for its revolutionary distribution concept. Being able to get the whole album for free anytime you want upholds the integrity of the album as opposed to downloading your two favorite songs (btw: mine are ‘Reckoner’ and ‘All I Need’) for 99 cents each and never realizing their place within the whole record.
Sonically, the new album prompts a look back to the softer feel of The Bends while marinating in the sharp electro-pop feel of Kid A. Strangely, it is much more harmonic and sensitive as a whole than some of their most recent work but continues to evoke the universally diverse perception of emotion they have somehow always had a knack for.
Music to shake your head to (in a good way). Relief and contentment. End with applause. You may want to continue.
