Disney Theatrical Productions and the FCCJ Artist Series announced today that tickets for the long-awaited production of Disney’s The Lion King will go on sale to the public on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 a.m. Jacksonville’s most eagerly awaited stage production will begin performances at the Times-Union Center on Thursday, March 8 for a limited engagement of six weeks through Sunday, April 15. The opening night is Saturday, March 10 at 8:00 p.m. This United States National Tour is currently one of seven productions running worldwide along with New York, a second United States National Tour, London, Hamburg, Tokyo and Seoul. An additional production will open in June 2007 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Ticket buyers are invited to special box office opening festivities on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Times-Union Center. Tickets sales for Disney’s The Lion King begin at 7:00 a.m. The first 100 ticket purchasers will receive a free Lion King Broadway Original Cast Recording CD, and all other ticket purchasers that morning will receive a free Lion King T-shirt. Starting at 6 a.m., free Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and donuts will be served and Jodie Stewart from The new 96-9 The Eagle will broadcast live and giveaway prizes. From 8 to 10 a.m., join Andy Meyer from 102.9 The Point for free coffee and donuts, karaoke and prizes. WAPE’s Eden Kendall will be on site from 10 a.m. to noon with lunch from Crispers and Pepsi.
Now in its ninth sold-out year on Broadway, The Lion King is the winner of six Tony® Awards including Best Musical, eight Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, the New York Drama Critics award for Best Musical, the Evening Standard Award for the Theatrical Event of the Year, two Olivier Awards, a Theatre World Award, the Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography, two Drama League Awards and a Grammy®for Best Musical Show Album.
Director Julie Taymor became the first woman in Broadway history to win the Tony® Award for Best Director of a Musical. Taymor, along with Michael Curry, created hundreds of masks and puppets for The Lion King.
Choreography is by Garth Fagan, scenic design is by Richard Hudson, costume design is by Julie Taymor and lighting design is by Donald Holder. The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated film and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay.
The score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from the animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice, additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer.
The Lion King will be performed at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts beginning Thursday, March 8 and showing through Sunday, April 15. Tickets range in price from $28.50 to $75. Premium Ticket Packages are also available for $132 and include VIP seating and special services at the theatre. All ticket prices include a facility fee and service charges. Groups of 20 or more can order now by calling (904) 632-3228. Special pricing is available for groups if they order before December 1, 2006.
The Jacksonville engagement of THE LION KING is presented by arrangement with the FCCJ Artist Series and is a subscription offering of the SunTrust Broadway Across America Jacksonville Series.
