Sean Lennon’s first album, Into the Sun, was barely noticed when it was released in 1998. Eight years later, Lennon’s second album, Friendly Fire, is receiving well deserved attention. Son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, the focus of Sean Lennon’s life has always been music. With the help of his father, Lennon learned to play piano at an early age. Often left to an empty house filled with pianos, he became accustomed to playing and began to write songs.

His new album, Friendly Fire, was inspired by a romantic relationship that turned to tragedy a little more than a year ago, after Lennon’s girlfriend had an affair with his best friend, who subsequently passed away, before Lennon could reconcile with him. This event influenced a maelstrom of emotions which are expressed on the album ranging from love to sadness. The word “love” is used in pretty much every song, being the spark of Lennon’s emotions and basis for his album. There is also the reoccurring theme that being the son of a rock and roll legend does not make his love life any easier, nor his music career.
Throughout the album, his voice has a familiar sound, reminiscent of his father’s soft wispy tone, as he almost breaks down in tears. And almost every song is accompanied by guitar and the eerie sounds of an orchestra in the background sounding like lullabies and music boxes. But still reflecting Lennon’s feelings, and one of the album’s best songs, is also a cover. Lennon turns Marc Bolan’s “Would I Be the One” into a space age dream rock song with a glamorous guitar solo and heavy effects on his voice. This song stands out among the others.
Lennon also adds a visual element to the album; each song is accompanied by a short film created by Lennon with amazing cinematography. These shot films differ in subject, including sword fights and love scenes, but directly relate to emotions felt in the songs, and all feature Lennon. The short films also feature such stars as Lindsay Lohan, Asia Argento, and Carrie Fisher, just a few among many friends of Lennon making an appearance in the films.
Already performing the album’s first single “Dead Meat” on The Late Show with David Letterman, Lennon has begun his North American tour, hitting major cities in the U.S. and Canada. He also has plans to begin touring Europe. Friendly Fire could be a classic to some, and a drink coaster to others, but this album is out now, and is one of 2006’s great albums.
