THE JOCK
by Tom Weppel

Random thoughts from a cluttered mind...

JAGUARS This Jaguars team has become the most inconsistent bunch of players in the world. They can go out and beat the crap out of really good teams like the Cowboys and Colts, then lose to the Texans and Redskins.

In the last two weeks, we’ve seen this group run all over Indy, yet they can’t prevent themselves from turning the ball over, losing to the upstart Titans. It’s wild, amazing, and, if you’re really deep into these guys, frustrating to observe.

All that being said, should we now expect Jacksonville to come out and put a number on the Pats? Playing a good team at home seems to the two main ingredients for the Jags to play well and win. At 8-6, they certainly need to win these last two games to have a shot at a playoff spot, or else they can wrap up the season. Three other teams have 8-6 records, including the Jets, Bengals, and Broncos, showing there is a lot of horses in the race. Let’s see the Jaguars come off their loss with a solid Christmas present!

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE Of this weeks’ contests, only TWO of them carry no playoff implications whatsoever. The rest all have at least one team playing for a playoff spot or slotting of some kind. This means once again, there are plenty of interesting contests this holiday weekend.

There will be some intense match ups involving Division rivals, including Philly/Dallas and Carolina/Atlanta. You will also see wild card possibles square off, such as Cincy/Denver. With the way games have turned out each week, there’s no way to predict who’s going to do what. It’s virtually impossible, in my mind. This all will make for another unpredictable weekend, as we all have seen so far, in the National Football League.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION And so Allen Iverson has left Philly and is now in Denver, where he will ply his trade. Of course, we won’t know exactly what kind of team the Nuggets will have until all the suspensions have been completed by the players involved in the brawl at MSG last week. In the meantime, Iverson will get acclimated to his surroundings, his coach, and his fans.

What this also does is further weaken a very lame Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. Not one team is even close to being a .500 ballclub, which is sad. The Celtics, Nets, Knicks, Raptors, and Sixers all have subpar rosters that aren’t doing near what we are seeing in the Western Conference, where team like the Suns are virtually on fire. That view is magnified in the entire NBA, where the Western Conference is far superior to the Eastern Conference overall. We’ll see how the rest of the season plays out.
