The premiere exhibition titled “Elements” will be held on Friday December 8, 2006 from 6-9. The exhibition will feature new photographic works by Thomas Hager, paintings by Tonya Lee, John Bunker, and sculpture by Joe Segal.
Thomas Hager continues his exploration of nature through his investigation of shell and other organic forms from the sea in which he creates large photographic works of art. His exploration of organic forms, which become viscerally sculptural and his use of 19th century processes reveals the true passion Hager has for his medium and subject matter.
Tonya Lee’s paintings are a culmination of gestural abstraction meets illustration meets myth-making meets design meets decoration. Lee’s paintings intentionally work in oppositions to avoid concrete meaning, in order to prevent clear narrative for the viewer.
“Paint in opposition to painterly, icon absent of definition, absolute in opposition to spatial, gesture in opposition to rigidity, suggestion versus evasion, system defines random” are phases by which Lee describes her work. “My narrative is no more important than the one created in the viewer’s mind”, says Lee.
Brilliant color and the use of white are signatures of John Bunker’s work. Bunker’s paintings capture and command our attention with a tour de force that vibrates from the canvas. According to one art critic, “ The subjects of his paintings are … simmering with energy, saturated with fragments of color and wonderfully alive.”
Whether carving a block or assembling fragmented pieces, Segal’s work uses sculpture to echo the repetitive quality found in nature and examines the core of what he’s working with. By exploring the essence of the materials he works with, he strives to unite our need for order with the illusive nature of our environment. “This intersection takes place within the most basic element of our existence- the passage of time” say’s Segal
